Costa Blanca Cities: Torrevieja, a Coastal Gem!

Valencia and Alicante are the best-known cities of the southeastern Mediterranean coast. But Torrevieja, a municipality just shy of 100,000 inhabitants, actually beats them in many aspects. To start with, Torrevieja’s harbour is much bigger than Valencia’s or Alicante’s … or even Barcelona’s!

And Torrevieja’s latest census comprises more than 120 nationalities. Why is this place so popular?

Take the vicinity of the two large salt lakes that creates a super-healthy microclimate lauded by the World Health Organization. Retirees from the north of Europe are attracted to the year-round warmth and the clean air – great antidotes for asthma, rheumatism, and many skin ailments. And the salt industry at the “pink lake” is Europe’s biggest of its kind.

Torrevieja is slightly more laid back than some well-known party destinations, for example, Benidorm. But the “City of Salt” has more and more to offer, especially to families.

There are several large infrastructure projects under planning and some already under construction. To be finished already in early 2024 is the complete remodelling of the harbour area, with an underground parking garage for 600+ cars, five new two-storey buildings for restaurants, cinemas, a bowling alley, and more. Several old buildings in disuse have been demolished to give more space for leisure activities. The new fish market already opened trading in September 2022. And the passing four-lane main thoroughfare will be converted into a pedestrian street and evening market. See a video here.

The southbound main promenade will be stretched out all the way to the southern beach, Playa de los Náufragos. And the Town Hall has already issued the first planning permissions for up to a dozen first-line 26-floor residential and hotel buildings. See a video here.
