The town centre of Guardamar del Segura is situated 35 km south of Alicante City, 33 km from Alicante-Elche (ALC) airport, and 14 km north of Torrevieja. The resident population of Guardamar is around 16,000, some 25% of which are foreigners, mainly European expats. During Easter Week and July-August, the population typically swells to around 50,000 when people from Madrid and other inland cities flock to their second residences.

Guardamar used to be a fishing and farming village. Today, the townscape is primarily characterized by five- to six-story houses, which are can be termed moderate in terms of urban planning. More recent developments in peripheral areas favour townhouses and villas, although some high-rise buildings have been erected on the northern side as well. In the town centre, a busy street market is open on Wednesdays from 8am to 2pm, and there is also a rural market outside the centre on Sundays.

The central beach, located within an easy walk from anywhere in the town, is 2,450 m long and 30 m wide. It was first awarded the European Blue Flag in 1987.
