The name Costa Blanca refers to the coastal area of the province of Alicante, located in south-eastern Spain. In addition to the city of Alicante (pop. 340,000) and its surroundings, well-known tourist areas in Costa Blanca South include Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, and Santa Pola. The area has dozens of miles of sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the European Blue Flag, which stands for cleanliness, services and user safety. The main airport, Alicante-Elche (ALC), is Spain´s fifth busiest airport. It is practically equidistant – about an hour´s drive – from the southernmost and northernmost areas of the province.
